Florence: Britmania 6 March 2009

By Michele De Capitani

The event, which will be held at the Saschall Theatre on March 6th, will host many different events, which will help us explore many aspects of British culture, from music to clothes, from theatre to art, from literature to motors, to strengthen the link between the city and all that is British. Britmania, which is supported by important British institutions operating in Italy like the British Consulate, the British Institute, Visit Britain and Angloinfo (this highlights the seriousness of the event and of the organisers intentions), is an even more important event if we think that such an event, the British Week, was last held in Florence in 1966. After over 40 years, this new happening is going to bridge the gap in the best possible way.

Britmania will open at 5 p.m. (this is not fortuitous, as this is tea time, one of the most famous and appreciated British rituals), with the concert of Rent, a band playing Britpop, and HER, who have been influenced by the British underground scene. Music, an important feature of British culture, above all in the last years, will play a main role: throughout the day the theatre stage will host many bands playing the songs of some of the most appreciated and famous British artists: there will be a Beatles tribute band (Voxpower), a Queens tribute band (Queenmania) and a Robbie Williams tribute band.

There will be also many art, literature and theatre events that you cannot miss: the Saschhall will host an exhibition of works realised by British painters, photographers, sculptures and artisans, and the focus will be on those artists that live or work in Italy. As far as literature is concerned, there will be a literary salon, i.e. a space for debates, which will host the presentation of the review LEcologist and the debate Florence and UK: history of a long time relationship, which will make us discover that in the 19th century around a third Florences citizens were foreigners, mainly from the UK, and that among them there were also well-known people like Robert and Elizabeth Browning. Between the magazine presentation and the debate visitors will have the possibility to watch The Betrayal, a work by the great playwright Harold Pinter, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2005. Thanks to this performance the company Florence International Theatre will give us the possibility to learn something more about another important feature of British culture.

However, British culture is not only art, literature, music and theatre: also many British objects and items have left their mark and have become symbols of the British style: to one of those symbols, the mini vintage, an exhibition will be dedicated, but visitors will have the possibility to find other interesting objects in the vintage and new items market.

Spending cheap vacations in Florence, the capital city of art, and discovering British culture at once is an opportunity that you cannot miss. Visit Britmania.

Menorca Offers 2009 Family Holiday Time

By Henry Ashworth

For Europeans wondering where to take their 2009 annual holidays, they might well want to give the Spanish island of Menorca some consideration, especially if they haven’t visited before, as it’s such a beautiful island, and easily accessible from the United Kingdom and the European mainland.

Menorca seems to have something for everyone, whether they are seeking a relaxing holiday on a quiet sandy beach by the Mediterranean, the excitement of a bustling city, the convenience of a resort, first class dining or a variety of sporting activities.

The landscape of the south coast of Menorca is primarily flat with deep gorges and majestic limestone cliffs. In this area, the majority of holiday areas are dotted along the span of the coast line and range from serene, quaint hamlets to relatively lively family resort options. Most resorts can be reached via the Mahon to Ciutadella Road, except for those on the southeast side, which can be reached from the capital via Sant Lluis.

Many of Menorca’s resorts now feature modern beach bars. At these places, you can get a great meal and a refreshing drink. Note that if you use the bathroom facilities at these bars, you’ll be expected to drop some change into the plate near the door.

Popular Resorts on Menorca

S’Algar is a small resort located on the southeast coast of Menorca, a short distance from Mahon and Sant Lluis. This is a ‘purpose-built’ resort, and it is very well cared for and offers a good selection of accommodation. Accommodation in S’Algar include two expansive hotels, several apartment complexes and some privately owned villas. You’ll also find a fair number of bars and restaurants along with a variety of shops. If you want to be active during your Menorcan resort holiday and not just lounge around, S’Algar has a host of sports facilities for you to enjoy. There is no beach here, however. You’ll have to travel to Cala Alcaufar, about a 15 minute walk.

Punta Prima boasts several hostels, hotels, apartments and villas to rent and a good selection of bars and restaurants for the convenience of its visitors. Unlike some of the other resorts in Menorca, Punta Prima also has two supermarkets and car rental facilities. If you are looking for a beach, you’ll find a beautiful one at Punta Prima, but be wary of the currents; they can be very strong at times. Take note of the warning flags that will alert you to the safety conditions of the water.

Binibeca Village is a beautiful, quiet resort consisting of Cala Torret in the east and Binebeca Vell to the west. This resort consists of all low-rise apartments and villas and offers no high-rise accommodations. The area around Binibeca has a variety of high-quality bars, restaurants and stores.

Son Bou is home to the largest and, for many visitors, the best beach on Menorca, accessible via a tunnel down the road from Alaior. This resort has two hotels at the eastern end. With just shy of two kilometers of beach bars, there is no shortage of opportunity for fun. For the more modest traveler, note that the farther west you go on this beach, the more scantily dressed the beach-goers are. It is perhaps not a good choice for a family vacation, but an ideal spot for couples or a group of friends.

Cala’n Porter is one of Menorca’s oldest resorts, sitting high atop cliffs that overlook a picturesque and safe beach. This resort is situated on the eastern side of a deep gorge that opens onto the beach and features a small stream running alongside during most of the year. This resort features just about everything you could want for a fun Menorcan holiday. A full range of shops, restaurants and bars are conveniently located at the center of the resort. Be sure to check out the cova d’en Xoroi, which are caves set into the cliffs, now made into a night club.

The holiday resort of Arenal d’en Castell sits on the rustic northern coast of Menorca, about twelve miles north-west of the country’s capital city, Mahon and the international airport. Although the distance from the airport to the resort is short, the roads along this route are not particularly good, so the journey can take up to about 40 minutes. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the scenery ands consider that your decision to holiday in Menorca for 2009 was a good one!
